IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be advised that this app is specifically designed for a doctoral research at the University of Canterbury and in order to login to the app you will need an access code. You can receive the access code after taking a survey and signing the consent form. The link to the survey will be provided to you when you first install and open the app. Please refer to the Information Sheet and Consent form page to learn more about this app, the research and its special terms and conditions.

EmotionTune (“EmotionTune”, “us”, “our” or “we”) is dedicated to protecting the privacy rights of our users (“users”, “your”, or “you”). This Privacy Policy (the “Policy”) describes the ways we collect, store, use, and manage the information, including personal information, that you provide or we collect in connection with our mobile application, “EmotionTune”, websites located at https://emotiontune.wixsite/home

Personal information can include, for example, an individual’s first and last name, telephone number, and e-mail address. Please note that the scope of this Privacy Policy is limited to information collected or received by EmotionTune through your use of the service. EmotionTune is not responsible for the actions of third party people or companies, the content of their sites, the use of information you provide to them, or any products or services they may offer. Any link to those sites does not constitute our sponsorship of, or affiliation with, those people or companies. EmotionTune will not ask for your credit card details, your address, or your telephone number.

BY INSTALLING, USING OR OTHERWISE ACCESSING THE SERVICE, YOU AGREE TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL, USE OR OTHERWISE ACCESS THE SERVICE. We may update this Policy from time to time. You are responsible for periodically reading this Policy. We will post all changes to this Policy on this page and the modified policy will specify its effective date.

Information Collected and Used

EmotionTune is a gamified app which is designed for a Doctoral Research as the University of Canterbury. EmotionTune will ask you to fill a survey before and after interacting with the game for a certain amount of time. The information you submit to the survey will be used in a PhD thesis, journal and conference articles. Once you install the game, you will be able to access an information sheet which outlines all the aspects of the game and also what is meant by participation and you can decide if you will be willing to continue using this service or withdraw. EmotionTune will not need your personal information (i.e. name and email address) for research purposes. You will only be required to enter your name and email address at the end if you would like to receive the 25NZD gift voucher for your participation. Please note that your responses to the survey will not be matched with your name and email address and the app is developed in a way that it automatically anonymizes the information that is submitted to the app. The information you submit to the surveys and the app may be aggregated to be used in academic research. However, anonymity is guaranteed.

This research is reviewed and approved by the University of Canterbury Human Ethics Committee (HEC REF: 2020/114).

iOS or Android Platforms

When you use EmotionTune, we may automatically collect and record certain information such as your unique device ID, MAC address, IMEI number, hardware type, the version of your operating system (“OS”), your in-game activity length. This information is useful to us for troubleshooting and helps us understand usage trends.

Google Servers

Google is our application engine service provider. Any information provided through our applications is available to Google as part of Google providing this service. However, this does not include the surveys. All the surveys operate on University of Canterbury Qualtrics Servers. Therefore, the information you submit to the surveys will not be available to Google or any other third party.

Retention of information

We will retain and use your Personal Information for the period necessary to comply with our legal obligations, to enforce our agreements, resolve disputes, and unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law. We may use any aggregated data derived from or incorporating your Personal Information after you update or delete it, but not in a manner that would identify you personally. Once the retention period expires, Personal Information shall be deleted. Therefore, the right to access, the right to erasure, the right to rectification, and the right to data portability cannot be enforced after the expiration of the retention period.

Data analytics

we may use third-party analytics tools that use cookies, web beacons, or other similar information-gathering technologies to collect standard internet activity and usage information. The information gathered is used to compile statistical reports on User activity such as how often Users visit our Mobile Application and Services, what pages they visit and for how long, etc. We use the information obtained from these analytics tools to monitor the performance and improve our Mobile Application and Services. We do not use third-party analytics tools to track or to collect any personally identifiable information of our Users and we will not associate any information gathered from the statistical reports with any individual User.

Push notifications

We offer push notifications to which you may voluntarily subscribe at any time. To make sure push notifications reach the correct devices, we rely on a device token unique to your device which is issued by the operating system of your device. While it is possible to access a list of device tokens, they will not reveal your identity, your unique device ID, or your contact information to us. We will maintain the information sent via e-mail in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. If, at any time, you wish to stop receiving push notifications, simply adjust your device settings accordingly.

Information security

We secure information you provide on computer servers in a controlled, secure environment, protected from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. We maintain reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards in an effort to protect against unauthorized access, use, modification, and disclosure of Personal Information in our control and custody. However, no data transmission over the Internet or wireless network can be guaranteed. Therefore, while we strive to protect your Personal Information, you acknowledge that (i) there are security and privacy limitations of the Internet which are beyond our control; (ii) the security, integrity, and privacy of any and all information and data exchanged between you and the Mobile Application and Services cannot be guaranteed; and (iii) any such information and data may be viewed or tampered with in transit by a third party, despite best efforts.

Data breach

In the event we become aware that the security of EmotionTune has been compromised or Users’ Personal Information has been disclosed to unrelated third parties as a result of external activity, including, but not limited to, security attacks or fraud, we reserve the right to take reasonably appropriate measures, including, but not limited to, investigation and reporting, as well as notification to and cooperation with law enforcement authorities. In the event of a data breach, we will make reasonable efforts to notify affected individuals if we believe that there is a reasonable risk of harm to the User as a result of the breach or if notice is otherwise required by law. When we do, we will post a notice in EmotionTune.

Changes and amendments

We reserve the right to modify this Policy or its terms related to EmotionTune at any time at our discretion. When we do, we will post a notification in EmotionTune. We may also provide notice to you in other ways at our discretion, such as through the contact information you have provided. An updated version of this Policy will be effective immediately upon the posting of the revised Policy unless otherwise specified. Your continued use of EmotionTune after the effective date of the revised Policy (or such other act specified at that time) will constitute your consent to those changes. However, we will not, without your consent, use your Personal Information in a manner materially different than what was stated at the time your Personal Information was collected.
